Wedding is a symbol of love and dedication between 2 people but it can turn out into a nightmare for whoever is planning it. Bridesmaid is a funny romp to the altar. It is the female version of Hangover.
Bridesmaid stars Kristen Wiig of Saturday Night Live as the friend Annie and maid of honor of the bride Lillian played by Maya Rudolph. From the start of the movie with Annie having sex Kama Sutra style with an asshole bachelor, it is clear that we are in for an R-rated, funny, raunchy movie.
Annie’s personal world crumbled when her Milwaukee cake business went under and now she works at a jewelry store, got fired for talking happy couples out of buying engagement rings. She met possible boyfriend material Officer Rhodes when he stopped her for broken tail lights in her car. She talked her way out of the ticket.
Lillian made Annie to be the maid of honor in her wedding and with Annie’s professional and personal life in shambles, Annie is forced to pull it together or remain in shambles. There are wedding meltdowns (in a funny way) and the usual problems and issues related to planning a wedding. The shower and engagement parties (the maid of honor and bridesmaid speeches went on too long), bad fittings (the toilet humor is so gross but funny), bride having a cold feet.
The movie is well written. There’s a lot of characters but with these characters the films more than 2 hours length make it look like it is shorter than 2 hours. There’s Annie’s brother/sister British roommates, Lillian’s “new friend” and bridesmaid Helen (a well to do and very polish but lonely wife), the other bridesmaid and Annie’s mom. The movie is well written with all these characters doesn’t look like a compilation of sketches.
With all it’s toilet humor, fiasco related to planning a wedding made worst by the leading character’s personal problems, Bridesmaid is a well written, funny movie with a humor on the perspective of women. There may be fewer women comedians in the entertainment industry than male comedians but they are as funny as the men.
