Jack the GiantJack the Giant Slayer is Hollywood’s retelling of an old folktale. It is the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand opens a gateway between our world and the world of fearsome race of giants.

Unleashed on earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave but rebellious princess (Isabelle), he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

The film added a wrinkle to the old fairy tale; a long-standing feud between the giants who live in the sky and Isabelle’s forefathers. Jack with the help of Elmont climbed the giant beanstalk to the sky to rescue the princess.Jack the Giant 1 Jack the Giant 3

Princess Isabelle is brave and rebellious and that she does not want to marry Roderick, a devious guy her father approve of.

The film is the old Jack & the Beanstalk folktale but with spruced up with visual effects and state of the art battle action scenes, mainly computer generated. It is a re-telling of the old fairy tale with some subtle additions.

Jack the Giant 4The film is visually impressive specially the giants. There is some corny humor in the film like the giants’ flatulence and one giant’s urge to pick his nose. The movie lacks character development but then the demographic for its intended audience is the male teenagers.

It stars Nicholas Hoult as Jack, Eleanor Tomlinson as Isabelle, Ewan McGregor as Elmont and Stanley Tucci as Roderick. Directed by Bryan Singer.Jack the Giant 5

  1. Grady George says:

Jack is a lowly farm boy with an imagination full of the stories his mother told him about giants as a young boy. When he is tasked to sell his horse and cart at the castle, he is given magical beans by a strange monk who warns him not to get them wet. That night, the King’s daughter leaves the castle but is forced to stop at Jack’s house when the rain comes. Being touched by the rainwater, one of the beans creates a huge beanstalk, taking the princess to the very top. Jack and some of the King’s men must climb the beanstalk to rescue her and face terrible dangers when they get there.

  2. Nancy says:

This is a special effects driven movie with little characterization. When the special effects are isolated and away from the “real life” visuals, the movie is lost.

  3. Andrew says:

The story is alright with a twist of the traditional fairy tale and with its British wit. The special effects brought the story to life and helped create a fantastic adventure. I loved this movie and would recommend it for older children and preteens. The scenes of giants eating people were not too graphic.

  4. Joan says:

I can’t help but wonder why they spent millions of dollars and countless man hours just to tell an old tale.

  5. A. Cloney says:

This was a really fun movie and a take on a classic childrens story. It had just the right amount of seriousness to stop it from being silly. No complaints really with the casting or the writing and special effect where done well. A great movie for just about any age. Definitely recommended and worth seeing!

  6. Aldo says:

You will not get any emotional connection out of this movie, but it still has some very exciting action sequences and fantastic visual effects. I had a much better time watching this movie than I ever thought I would.

  7. Austin C. says:

The movie is very formulaic and so over the top, unreasonable story too. Also some corny and cheesy lines. That being said, Jack the Giant Slayer is an entertaining fairly tale.

  8. Jessica says:

An unnecessary retelling of the old tale. However, it is not without its moments and there’s enough goofy fun and comedy to laugh about.

  9. Cameron Girl says:

This movie is full of action almost two hours of good fun. I went to this movie to enjoy the fairy tale and enjoy the imagined Jack and the Beanstalk. This movie did that very well in my opinion.
