Mud 1Mud is a coming-of-age and an adventure about two boys (Ellis and Neckbone) who found and befriended a man hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. The two boys found the man when they discovered a boat high up in a tree on an island in the Mississippi River. The man is Mud and he killed a man in Texas and bounty hunters are coming to get him.

Mud is planning to escape and meet Juniper in Mississippi. Juniper is the love of his life and she is waiting for him in town.

Ellis and Neckbone are skeptical of Mud but agreed to help him. It is not long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow.Mud 2

Mud is a modern day Mark Twain novel about the adventures of two teenagers and wanting to escape and they have good reason to escape. Ellis’ parents are about to separate in part because the river is not as economic lifeblood it once was. Neckbone is already mostly on his own since his only family is his oyster-diving uncle.

Mud 3The main characters have their own story to tell and each main character is fully developed but it took a while for the various main characters to make their moves. The movie unfolds at its own pace telling the story of each character; the slow pacing is worth it as each character has each own story to tell.

The Mississippi River landscape is stunning; the long and winding river complements the story; it is a moving story, long and winding but the river runs through every scene.

The performances are outstanding specially Mathew McConaughey and Tye Sheridan. Overall, the movie is great with great story and great performances.

It stars Mathew McConaughey as Mud, Reese Witherspoon, Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland. Directed by Jeff Nichols.

One of the best film last year I’m sure it will be earning some awards, great sory and character development, great acting too.

  2. This moody, broody character-driven crime story is another fine step in the career redemption of Matthew McConaughey.

  3. Daryl Reyes says:

In 2011, Jeff Nichols directed the ominous “ Take Shelter ” with its roiling skies, its atmosphere of apprehension. “Mud” has no visions, but it has the same intimacy with textures and moods—dark, rotting waterside houses; the river itself; the spiders, snakes, and terrain of the Arkansas Delta. The movie is formally plotted, with many symmetries and variations; children without parents is the dominant structural device. But it also has its rough and scraggly look, and actors with the worn faces of hard-working country people—especially Sam Shepard as a mysterious old man living on the other side of the river from Ellis, and Sarah Paulson as Ellis’s mother. Nichols has developed a talent for intimacy and for continuous tension—he could be developing into one of the great movie storytellers.

Mud was simply a pleasure. At it’s heart, there’s a young boy desperately searching for love, and he does find it, but not quite where he was expecting.

  6. alan of LA says:

Has to be one of the top films of the year, all performances are exceptional, like Place Beyond The Pines it’s a generational drama but with it’s out-in-the-sticks location and beatifully captured cinematography it takes things up a gear.

  7. Olga Preston says:

“You gotta watch yourself.” Mud (Matthew McConaughey) In fact, everyone needs to watch himself, mostly the eponymous fugitive and almost so the 14 year olds Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland), who aid the murderer Mud as he connects with his lost love, Juniper (Reese Witherspoon) and evades bounty hunters and irate family members of his victim. Everyone seems to be running from something. This crisp thriller and psychological study can be enjoyed on two levels: First, it’s a darn good chase story with Mud being pursued by bad guys and Mud chasing his love; second, it’s a coming-of-age story as the boys, especially Ellis, sift through adult lies and compromises and their own growing sense of love’s importance. That love covers parent for child, friend for friend, and boy for girl.Although writer-director Jeff Nichols may be trying to do too much with those themes, he succeeds in crafting characters we really care about whose arcs promise to extend beyond the story, embracing universals that extend beyond rural Arkansas. So important is the river to the boys that inquisitive and ornery Huck Finn is as close as the next bend in the river. While the title could represent the dirty little world of sin on the river, it also suggests the primal stuff from which Eve was made. Women are the central metaphor for the boys, who already know girls must be dealt with before boys can be called men. Yet, beyond dealing with the opposite sex, they must decide who’s good and who’s evil, regardless of gender. That consideration starts with family and moves to the family of man. That’s quite a lot for a little film. It delivers. If my comments don’t convince you to see this indie gem, then consider the supporting cast of Michael Shannon, Reese Witherspoon, Joe Don Baker, and Sam Shepard. You’ll crab there’s not enough of each one, and that’s all good. And I’m not just slinging mud.

Fantastic film. A great piece of American story-telling. 2 Boys must help a banished criminal reunite with his true love. A coming of age drama, about love, adolescence, and choosing what you can or cannot live without. Great movie with a great story to tell.

  10. June says:

The slow pace may be too much for some, but ‘Mud’ is a rewarding experience with an agreeable ending. All the actors did a solid job in their roles and the film is well shot. The clash with a boy struggling with harsh realities and the suspense of a man hiding from bad people is the central focus to this solid film.

  11. MS says:

Matthew McConaughey did great in this film so is Reese Witherspoon. The plot of the movie was very well told and done and the atmosphere that was built in the story is really great and enjoyed it a lot.

  20. Claire says:

Mathew McConaugey is good in this, but he and Reese Witherspoon but the two young teens in the movie who are mesmerizing. They did a wonderful job which is so believable. The movie is primarily a story of two friends who are on the cusp of adolescence. They live on the banks of the Mississippi River and ride a dirt bike and a small boat through the delta and town. The location is also a character in the movie and it draws you in just like the characters do.
