Jupiter Ascending is the story of Jupiter Jones who was born under a night sky out in the sea with all the signs predicting she is destined for greatness. The story takes place in Chicago where Jupiter grows up living with relatives crammed in an apartment and dreaming of the stars but wakes up with the reality that she is a cleaning lady for other people’s houses.
Her endless run of bad breaks turns around when she met Caine Wise who is a genetically engineered former military hunter. Caine is from another galaxy and came to Earth to locate Jupiter as she is to inherit a royal kingdom; Jupiter is the genetic reincarnation of an ancient queen, a matriarch of a royal family who owns a large portion of the universe which includes the Earth. This family has a business which involves harvesting the population of planets in order to extract an elixir that extends life, making people younger.
Jupiter Ascending has a very thin plot with a basic story of a villain from space and comes to earth in order to harvest people and expand their own universe. It is poorly written with corny dialogue and the fight scenes above the Chicago skyline is not watchable.
While the movie has a thin plot it has great style and stunning visuals and special effects. Custom design is great specially the rich and ornate gowns worn by Mila Kunis; the white gown with red embellishment she wore for the arranged wedding is stunning. The customs worn by the other characters looks edgy and stunning as well.
Jupiter Ascending is not a bad movie but then it is not good either.
It stars Mila Kunis as Jupiter Jones, Channing Tatum as Caine, Eddie Redmayne as Balem Abrasax, Douglas Booth as Titus Abrasax, Sean Bean as Stinger Apini. Written and directed by Lana Wachoski and Andy Wachoski.
