The Nice Guys is about a pair of struggling private detectives in Los Angeles during the 70’s who stumbled on a sprawling conspiracy while investigating the alleged suicide of a prominent female porn star.
Jackson Healy and Holland March are both private investigators working separately until their paths crossed thru a common link, a girl named Amelia. They both teamed up to crack the case of missing Amelia but stumbled on a sprawling conspiracy involving the Detroit car makers on one hand and environmentalist and smog on the other.
The movie is very well written, directed and superbly acted with the 1970’s production design believable without going overboard. This is an action movie with a touch of mystery. The main characters are well developed and the chemistry between them is wonderful and so with supporting characters.
Like most of Shane Black movies that he directed, The Nice Guys is made in Black’s style of film making, an action-comedy about two buddies, their chemistry or the lack thereof presented in a comedic fashion. Ryan Gosling as bumbling investigator worked very well with Russell Crowe’s serious but temperamental character. Overall the movie is great and very entertaining although the violence is really in your face; they could have trimmed some of it without having any impact on the overall quality of the movie.
