Me Before You is adapted from the bestselling novel by JoJo Moyes which is about the relationship between a simple English woman and a wealthy quadriplegic Londoner who hires her as his caretaker.
The relationship is unexpected between the two considering their differences; him a wealthy, educated successful banker with good taste of the finer things of life and her simple, perky with a quirky taste of clothes. She resembles Ugly Betty, perky and loves “unusual” clothes which makes her standout in a crowed while he likes classical music and highbrow foreign films.
Louisa Clark and her family is having financial difficulties and forced to take job to take care William Traynor a young successful banker but had an accident and became quadriplegic. Being young, successful and athletic, William wanted to die and gave his parents 6 months to change his mind. The parents hired Louisa to help change his mind within this 6 month.
The film may look typical movie about assisted suicide and about a young energetic, successful man dealing with the consequences of a tragic accident but has several surprises. Although it is dealing with a sensitive and depressing subject, it is not preachy. The two main characters have good chemistry and Emilia Clark as the perky Louisa is did a wonderful job and being an adaptation of a bestselling novel, the plot and writing is excellent. It is an emotional film but did not wallow in heavy drama; it had just the right amount of charm and drama. The right popular music is also used throughout the film to convey what is in the character’s mind.
Overall this is a wonderful uplifting movie which will make you laugh and be sad at the same time. Emilia Clark’s performance is a surprise.
