Queen of Katwe is a true to life feel good movie about Phiona, a girl from the slums of rural Katwe in Uganda selling corn on the streets whose world dramatically changed when she is introduced to the game of chess and determined to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
She grew up in poverty but with the support of her community and a single mother who works tirelessly selling vegetables and is determined to feed her kids and have roof over their heads, she is able to pursue her dream. Phiona was discovered by Robert Katende a soccer player turned missionary teaching children in the slums how to play chess. He was impressed by Phiona’s intelligence, concentration and strategic thinking; characteristics necessary to play.
The movie plot is predictable where a poor girl with special talent goes though hard life just so she can fulfill her dreams with the help of a tireless mother and a coach. It is a familiar movie but with important differences; most of the important character and central figure are black women. Being a Disney movie, it is upbeat and a feel good movie notwithstanding the backdrop of poor slums of Uganda.
As usual Lupita Nyong’o delivered a stellar performance; she is after all an Academy awardee. The movie is fast paced with the story presented in a straight forward manner showing the rough life of Phiona, her mother and siblings; the shots are glossy even in scenes of the slums of Katwe.
The movie is recommended specially if you are in the mood for a feel good movie. It is a wonderful movie about pursuing your dreams.
